How to Draw An Ice Cube. While many look forward to the hot summer days, the hottest days can get pretty uncomfortable!

Luckily, there are a few ways to stay cool during heat waves, and one of the best ways is to enjoy a cold drink with a few ice cubes.

Although they have a fairly simple shape, you might be surprised that learning to draw an ice cube can be challenging!

How to Draw An Ice Cube

Step 1

We’ll keep things nice and simple for this first step of our how-to-draw-an-ice cube guide. We will outline the cube itself; as you can imagine, it has a square shape.

Try imagining a physical cube as you draw this outline, and keep that in mind as you replicate the shape in our reference image.

Although it’s a square shape, we recommend not using a ruler and prefer to draw freehand.

This is because the edges of the ice cube have melted a bit, so the edges need to be more straight.

Now that we’ve drawn this shape, we’ll add some details for the ice cube in the next few steps.

Step 2

We mentioned earlier that the cube will look slightly melted in your ice cube drawing, and we’ll start depicting that in this next step.

You can do this by drawing a small puddle under the cube, and we can do this with a few rounded lines to create the puddle shape shown in the reference image.

That’s all we’re going to draw for this step. So if you’re ready, let’s move on!

Step 3

You’ve drawn the outline and puddle for this image, so for the next step in our guide to drawing an ice cube, let’s start with arguably the most difficult effect.

The ice cube is transparent, so representing that transparency can be a challenge.

However, we’ll show you how and get you started right away! To start with this effect, draw two curved lines near the top of the center of the ice cube.

As you can see in the reference image, these two simple lines show where the top and sides of the ice cube are.

We won’t be adding this one anymore, so you can finish this step by drawing some small round shapes as some smaller parts of the puddle.

Step 4

In this fourth step of your ice cube design, we will continue adding the transparency effect you started in the previous step.

First, you can draw some lines over the two you added in the last step. Next, we will add curved lines on the cube’s left side and near its base.

This step requires you to refer closely to the reference image when drawing. Just try to copy the new lines exactly as they appear in our picture, and you will succeed!

Step 5

Now it’s time to finalize the picture to prepare you for the final step of this how-to-draw ice cube guide.

Draw An Ice Cube

To do this, we will focus on completing the reflective effect of the cube. To do this, we will add more corner lines to the cube, but they will be slightly more distorted than the ones already drawn. This is because they must be seen through the rest of the cube.

Once you’ve drawn these lines, you can add some straight, reflective lines down the side of the cube and finally draw a reflection in the puddle.

Once these details are completed, you are ready for the final step!

Step 6

In this final phase of designing your ice cube, you can finish by adding some color. We used some light shades of blue in our reference image.

Try and use the lightest blue you have, as we aim to give the ice cube a transparent look.

The media you use for the colors can also have an impact, and we recommend using a softer medium.

Some of the mediums we would choose would be watercolors and colored pencils. Then, for some contrast, you could use a black pen or marker on some edge details.
